Dr. Carnel Smith, a longtime Toledo educator, and former football star, is hosting his 21st annual football camp this summer. The mission of the camp is to help instill more than just offensive and defensive skills in the youth who attend, but also social skills such as respect, discipline, and character. Dr. Smith hopes that by attending the free camp for boys in third grade to eighth grade they will develop a love for the sport of football and build confidence in themselves which can lead to them becoming leaders within their communities. In addition to football skills, the camp will also focus on teamwork and communication, as these are important qualities for success both on and off the field. Dr. Smith believes that through this holistic approach, the boys will not only improve their athletic abilities but also develop into well-rounded individuals with strong values and social skills.
For over two decades now, Dr. Smith has been dedicated to encouraging and inspiring youth from all around Toledo with his passion for service at heart. His goal is not only to teach kids about sports but also how it relates to life itself; he believes that “football – or any sport – is a great metaphor for life” allowing young people an opportunity to learn invaluable lessons on teamwork, cooperation, dedication and perseverance amongst other important values which are essential tools when facing adversity in everyday situations outside of sports as well. Additionally, he stresses the importance of sportsmanship and fair play, emphasizing that winning is not everything and that respecting one’s opponents is just as important as winning the game. He hopes that through sports, young people can develop not only physical skills but also important life skills that will serve them well in all aspects of their lives.
Dr. Smith understands that there are many children out there who have never played football before but still seek out these social skills which come with participating in team activities such as this and he encourages them to come along. He has also been working closely with other agencies that are hosting their youth summer activities to provide a safe space for children to learn the game of football in an environment free from violence. Dr. Smith is confident that if the community comes together we can help our children grow into successful citizens of future generations. These summer activities not only teach football skills, but also promote teamwork, discipline, and healthy habits that can benefit children throughout their lives. By investing in our youth today, we can create a brighter tomorrow for our community.
The camp will take place on either the 12th or 16th of June and the first 100 kids who register will receive free book bags and t-shirts. If you want to be a part of this life-changing experience, there is no better time than now so don’t hesitate to sign up!
Dr. Carnel Smith’s camp is a wonderful opportunity to improve social skills and build character and an overall love for sports amongst the youth of the Toledo area. We are confident that with his guidance and support our children can become strong leaders of tomorrow!
