Black Swamp Observatory
Northwest Ohio is renowned for its spectacular bird watching opportunities, especially during the spring migration season. The Black Swamp Observatory in Oak Harbor proudly proclaims that it is the best place to observe songbirds migrating in North America. The birds gather on the southern edge of Lake Erie to rest and refuel before crossing, and the budding trees make visibility exceptional. In addition to warblers, a variety of other species such as thrushes, vireos, flycatchers, eagles, orioles, and shorebirds can be seen. Metroparks Toledo offers excellent birding experiences as well.
Oak Openings and Pearson are prime locations for migration, as the unique habitat of sand dunes and wet swales offer nesting sites for many species. Pearson has thick woods and a close proximity to Lake Erie that make it a popular stopover. Toledo Botanical Garden’s lush gardens, abundant trees and water features attract a wide variety of warblers in the spring, while Howard Marsh near Lake Erie is a magnet for shorebirds and waterfowl. With such an abundance of birding hotspots, Northwest Ohio is truly an avian paradise!
It’s easy to see why the Biggest Week in American Birding is such a widely popular event. From guided hikes and workshops to witnessing breathtaking displays of songbirds, there is so much to enjoy at the Bird Observatory of Northwest Ohio for birders across the world.
